Burgh Island, Devon

First, there's the famous Art Deco Burgh Island Hotel in which to stay. We've done it and recommend it as a great place. Then there's Burgh Island across the sand, or sea, from Bigbury-on-Sea. And then there's the South Devon coastline.

Bustling town on the River Dart and Estuary. Exceptional beauty with plenty to experience. Great choice of pubs and restaurants, hotels and shops. Also read our guides to the South Devon AONB and The English Riviera for many more local ideas and recommendations.

St. Ives

A gateway to The Penwith Peninsula, St Ives is a classic UK holiday destination and we'd strongly recommend it. St Ives Bay is sublime. Try also the Isles of Scilly off the Cornwall coast. Mounts Bay close by.

For the Camel Estuary. Lined with stunning blond beaches. Rock is across the water. Padstow is known for its fine food. Explore the surrounding area, eg Mother Ivey's Bay. South west, at Mawgan Porth, try 'The Scarlet', a luxury eco hotel.

Bath is on the southern fringe of the AONB. Going north, try Bradford-on-Avon, Malmesbury, Cirencester or the pretty villages of Lower Slaughter, Castle Combe or Bibury.

Salisbury Cathedral and Salisbury Cathedral Close are unforgettable, the water meadows in which Constable once painted are a joy. In Wiltshire, try also Lacock and Castle Combe.

Lorna Doone country. We'd particularly recommend Lynmouth, 'England's little Switzerland'. If you're looking for sand and sea, head west into the North Devon AONB. For something different, try Lundy Island.
