Corfe Castle, Dorset   Arguably the UK's finest castle ruin. Dominates the village of Corfe Castle within the Isle of Purbeck. This part of Dorset is a wonderful spot for a holiday or weekend break. Swanage is just down the road.

St Mawes Castle, Cornwall   Idyllic location with views across Falmouth Bay to Pendennis Castle. The small coastal town of St. Mawes is a joy. We'd also suggest walking the South West Coast Path to St Anthony Head Lighthouse.

Castle Drogo and Gardens, Devon     The last castle to be built in England. One of the members of the team here at PictureTheUK lived by the castle for years so we know the area well. Walk the Teign Gorge and visit Chagford.

Dunster Castle, Somerset   On the eastern border of Exmoor National Park. Explore Dunster Estate.

Tintagel Castle, Cornwall   Internationally famous castle and where King Arthur is said to have been conceived. The setting, again, is stunning on the Cornwall coast. Walk the South West Coast Path, Start (or End) north to Boscastle.

Berkeley Castle, Gloucestershire   North east of Bristol City. West of the Cotswolds AONB. Pop across to see Tintern Abbey whilst you're in the area.

Farleigh Hungerford Castle, Somerset   Another fine castle ruin, this time in Somerset. In the local area, visit Bradford-on-Avon.

Old Wardour Castle, Wiltshire   Most well known for its appearance in Kevin Costner's Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves, the casdtle provides top views across the Vale of Wardour.

Berry Pomeroy Castle, Devon   Located behind The English Riviera and north of the South Devon AONB. Great local walking. Visit Totnes Castle, too.
