Thailand scores a few hits at World Travel Awards

The 16th World Travel Awards, voted on by international travel agents, were announced in London on the weekend. Thailand didn’t fare amazingly well, scoring a single award in the "Asia" category, though one hotel did manage to snag a win in the “World” section.

Yeah, travel awards are a dime a dozen. But of the dozens of travel-related polls worldwide, few are voted on by people with that down-in-the-trenches knowledge global travel agents have taken years to acquire. These vacation planners are paid to check out the world’s hotspots firsthand, sometimes looking at dozens of hotels and attractions in a single day.
Back in the home office, of course, they get to listen to gripes from unhappy clients: “I’m terribly sorry that Hawaiian resort didn’t have enough roast pig at the luau like the brochere promised, sir. We’ll be sure to issue a complaint on your behalf.”

When travel agents vote for an airline or a hotel, it's usually pretty good.

In the World Travel Awards Asia section, Bangkok’s
Banyan Tree was voted “Asia's Leading Green Hotel," while Bangkok’s Lebua at State Tower was awarded the “World's Leading All-Suite Hotel."

Other winners in the Thailand category were:
Thailand’s Leading Business Hotel:
The Landmark Bangkok
Thailand's Leading Golf Resort: Blue Canyon Country Club (Phuket)
Thailand's Leading Hotel: The Mandarin Oriental Bangkok
Thailand's Leading Resort: Four Seasons Resort Chiang Mai
Thailand's Leading Spa Resort:
Evason Hua Hin Resort & Spa
